Error: Word cannot save or create this file (due to several possible causes).
Error:
Word cannot save or create this file. Make sure the disk is not write protected.
Cause:
There can be a number of reasons for this message. Among them are: Share file parameters are not set correctly; There is insufficient space to save file; TEMP setting in AUTOEXEC.BAT points to invalid location; SHARE.EXE (loaded in high memory) is using high memory manager other than EMM386.EXE; EMM386.EXE settings are incorrect; another application is conflicting with Word, etc.
Solution:
Close some documents (to free up file locks), ensure that there is sufficient space on drive to save file, edit AUTOEXEC.BAT to increase number of share file locks, and ensure that EMM386 settings are correct.
Do one or more of the following to resolve problem:
1) Close unnecessary documents to free file locks.
2) Increase available memory for the system.
3) Make sure that the disk where the file will be saved is not full, write-protected, or damaged.
4) Modify the share file locks parameter in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
5) Make sure that the SET TEMP line in AUTOEXEC.BAT refers to a valid location (e.g. a subdirectory that does not exist).
6) Make sure that the settings for EMM386.EXE expanded memory manager are correct (refer to MS-DOS documentation or contact the next level support). If unsure return to default settings by removing all switches after EMM386.EXE statement in CONFIG.SYS.
Example: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE
7) Make sure that there is not more than one line pertaining to SHARE.EXE in both AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.
8) Make sure that Master Word, or another 3rd party program, is not conflicting with Word by restarting Word with /A switch (see the Microsoft Word Users Guide for more information on this switch).
9) Make sure that an old version of Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is not conflicting with Word by exiting Word, turning off ATM, and then exiting and restarting Windows.
